Mellow Sunday
Listening to Pachelbel's Canon in D and enjoying the morning. It is foggy, but looks like it will burn off soon. I have been slow to get started on Christmas this year. I am not going to go nuts this year with either baking or making. Most of my family and friends are scaling back and being frugal. I do have a few presents made....
These are the exposed spine French Link books that I learned how to make from Jill Cardinal a local artist and teacher. I have made three so far and I am fine tuning the process as I go along. You'll probably notice I used the green with white polka dots paper as end papers for two of the books. What is not to like about green with white polka dotted paper?
I am making a few nichos for some friends as well. I am also working on a sweater for a very good friend of mine and some dish towels are in the process of being embroidered.
I am getting the Christmas decorations down this afternoon! Need to break out the Dean Martin Christmas CD....maybe not quite yet...

Tonia-Your books look great! I just learned some basic bookbinding earlier this year.
Those books are beautiful.
How do you make the nichos?
Thanks Lisa! Bookbinding is so much fun and very satisfying, I think.
Blaize, Thanks! I use sheets of thin aluminum that I cut to the nicho shape. I then use stencils or free hand designs onto the aluminum. I add a backing (usually an old manila file from work that was in the recycle bin). The aluminum is thin and would not hold its shape very well. I cover the backing with metallic duct tape to disguise it. I use the inside "drawer" of a small box of wooden matches (sans the matches) decorated with an image. I adhere the top edges of the box to the edges cut out of the aluminum. Once it is secure and dry I give it a wash of black acrylic ink. It doesn't cover it completely, but gets into the crevices of the designs making it less shiny. I hope this makes sense, if you have questions let me know! They make nice little gifts and can be used as ornaments since they are much lighter than real nichos.
I love the nichos! And the books are really gorgeous. I have never learned to do real book binding but I learned to do some folded booklets from a couple of book binding books I have.
Do you get sheets of aluminum from the hardware store?
