there is this stuff called Safety Kut or some lame spelling. It is like a very firm thick pencil eraser. i have a thing for birds and mushrooms so i sketched some images-keeping things on the simple side. Once I decided I liked one. I outlined the image and details in pencil and then put a piece of tracing paper over it and burnished it. Which basically means I took a popsicle stick and smoothed it over the tracing paper causing the pencil marks to transfer onto tracing paper, then took the tracing paper and placed on top of safety cut (with penicl marks face down) and burnished again. This tranfers the marks on to safety cut. Then taking an exacto knife I outline the image. This is where it can get tricky. You have to decide what details or aspects you want. If you carve away something it won't get any ink so you will have a white space. If you leave something it will get ink and print onto the paper. It is like woodblock printing or linoleum block printing. The safety cut is much easier to carve though.

Thanks, I loved making them. I carved the stamps (except for the letters on some of them.) So much fun!!! The cards and candles sold well.

We used this technique for carving letterboxing stamps and it was very fun!
